COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - For the first time in 19 seasons, Bishop England is returning to the Lowcountry without a state championship in volleyball. The Bishops were beaten in the finals of the 3-A tournament on Saturday, 3 sets to 1 by Powdersville.
The Bishops dropped the 1st 2 sets to the Patriots, the same way they did when these two teams met for the state title last season, but BE was only able to win the 3rd set before dropping the 4th set.
The loss snaps Bishop England’s national record of 18 straight state titles in volleyball and they end the season with a losing record of 20-33-2.
Wando made their 6th straight trip to the state championship game on Saturday but for the third straight year they return to the Lowcountry with the runners-up trophy.
The Warriors ran into a buzzsaw known as Nation Ford and, more specifically, their 6′5 junior Sophie Fischer who dominated the match and led Nation Ford to a straight sets victory.
Wando, who was the top ranked team in the state the entire season, ends the year at 49-4.
Oceanside Collegiate’s first trip to the volleyball state championship is one they won’t forget even if they’d rather not think about it right away.
The Landsharks were unable to get into any kind of rhythm on Saturday as they fall in straight sets to St. Joseph’s 25-15, 25-12, 25-12.
For St. Joe’s, the win marks their 8th straight state championship and 3rd straight in 2-A.
Oceanside ends their season at 34-10.
