CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Even in slow economic times there are some things women won't give up. In our exclusive Survey USA poll we found the number one thing women won't do without is their Blackberry or cell phone. Sixty-five percent of the women say they have to have it.
But there are other things worth splurging on like beauty and makeup. Women say personal upkeep is key.
"The way that you look has a lot to do with your self image and how you present yourself," Jordan Nemeth said.
"I'm still continuing to keep up my outer self," Susan Johnson said.
"You always have to look professional, always have to look good," Lauren Tayara said.
They say they'd rather save elsewhere instead, like on expensive dinner or jewelry.
In Live 5's exclusive Survey USA poll, we found out that a majority of women polled will give up like shopping and instead wearing clothing, shoes, or pocketbooks they've owned for years.
The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery says more than 80% of doctors are reporting increases in non-invasive procedures like Botox that removes wrinkles from the face, and costs thousands less than a face lift.
"They're looking for the most economical, least invasive way to improve their beauty," Dr. Gene Phillips said.
Makeup counters are having steady sales from what economists call a lipstick effect, women buying cosmetics when there's a struggling economy or during emotional times.
"You're going to spend a small amount but you're going to get a large return, and people want immediate gratification and they want to feel ok, and feel like everything is going to be alright, and makeup has always made women feel better," Trish McEvoy Andrew Petersen said.
Women feeling better by looking good, for some it's worth every penny.
Other than cosmetics our survey results show women weren't willing to give up electronics. Out of 300 women, 60% must have the internet, and 59% will keep their cable TV.
