NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - It's the first thing many of the folks on Ranger Drive saw this morning, the dead body of the robbery suspect. "Just moved here. This is the welcome North Charleston gives us," said Donnell Dunlap who witnessed the shooting.
Dunlap watched in disbelief as two men fired at each other right near his house. Police say a gunman went into a house at 2693 Ranger Drive, demanding money. But one of the four people inside the house got his own gun, and chased the guy into the street. That's when the bullets started flying.
"I heard some shots. Wife thought it was firecrackers. I presumed it not to be, and now we see," said Dunlap.
"There was an exchange of gunfire. The suspect was hit, ran out of the house. Of course he is deceased, was deceased on the scene," North Charleston Police spokesman Spencer Pryor said.
Police later identified the suspect as 25-year-old Demario Brown.
Several of the bullets missed their mark, hitting cars. "It was close, a bullet right there," said Dunlap. "My house right here, blood over there. A man dead over there. Just seeing somebody run down the street and then dying basically in front of us. It's something to be worried about, you know what I mean? Something like that shouldn't happen around here. It ain't right."
Police are trying to figure out if this was a case of self defense. "We're trying to sort it all out as to exactly what happened, the specifics of what happened and right now it's under investigation."
Donnell Dunlap says the shooting has left him no choice, but to pack up and move. "We need to get a hold of the community, a hold of the community. other than that, stuff like this is gonna happen every day in front of our kids."
The man who shot and killed Brown has been identified as Timothy King. King also was wounded, but his injuries are not life threatening. So far, no charges have been filed against him.
