Darius Rucker returns home to help needy school children

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Darius Rucker is taking a short break from his musical career to help some needy students get ready for the first day of school. 

The Charleston area native has teamed up with the Charleston County School District for Hootie's Homegrown Roundup, Back 2 Basics event at Edmund Burns Elementary in North Charleston.

The unique back to school program was developed to assist children with school supplies and other necessary items for the upcoming school year.

Students who come out to Wednesday's event will get a bookbag, t-shirt, Dawgs shoes and school supplies. A hair cut, dental exam and an eye exam will also be provided, as well as entertainment.

The event is only opent to students entering Kindergarten through 5th grade who participate in the free or reduced lunch program at Edmund A Burns, Midland Park, Chicora and Mary Ford Elementary School.

Hootie's Homegrown Roundup will take place from 1pm to 4pm Wednesday, August 12 at Edmund A. Burns Elementary School in North Charleston.
