CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC)- Charleston city police applied for the grant. A total of 500 thousand dollars. The school district told police what they needed to make schools more safe.Half of that 500 thousand is going to beef up school security.
"That 500 thousand dollars will get us cameras and access control at six different schools,"said Charleston County Campus Safety Coordinator Kevin Wrenn.
The schools are Buist Academy, James Simons Elementary, C.E. Williams Middle School, James Island Middle, St. Andrews middle and St. Johns High.
It's not just cameras these schools will get.
"The one neat thing about our cameras is that we will get to access them through the web."
In the past, accessing cameras could only be done from inside the school. That will change.
"Part of the grant will give Charleston City to pull up live feeds from their command post of the schools."
That means City Police can view any camera in any school through out the county from a laptop. Officials say that's beneficial during any type of lockdown situation. Both police and school officials say the new additions will keep more kids safe.
"You have got cameras, they are a deterrent. They are going to walk right down the street. They don't want to be caught."
