MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -For the last year three threatened sea turtles have been rehabilitating at the Marine Animal Research Center at the University of New England. After landing in Mount Pleasant two will be headed to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and the loggerhead will be going to the South Carolina Aquarium.
In November of 2008 the 95 pound loggerhead and two juvenile kemp ridley's were part of a cold stunning event off the New England coast. That means the water temperature dropped so much that they became too stunned to swim to warmer water.
Aquarium officials say different states work together all the time.
"Rehabilitation facilities stick together. When one facility becomes overcrowding animals can be moved to another state," said Kelly Thorvalson, Sea Turtle Rescue Program Manager.
