Charleston carriage company forced to shut down for week

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Carolina Polo Carriage Company has been suspended for 30 days. The company pleaded guilty in August to four violations of Charleston's animal welfare ordinance.

According to a letter from the city's Director of Tourism, Carolina Polo must close for seven days starting November 24th. If there are any violations within 90 days of that date, the company will have to shut down for an additional 23 days.

The city cited Carolina Polo during an inspection over the summer months. The violations included giving the horses low-quality feed and hay and city-paid veterinarians altered medical records. The city inspects the carriage companies once a year.
