SC holiday wish: Clean drinking water for world

Associated Press - December 4, 2009 4:15 AM ET

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - One wish by a South Carolina group this holiday season is providing more safe drinking water for the world.

Water Missions International of Charleston is hosting 30 of its directors working in 10 nations from Haiti to Indonesia. It's part of a weeklong meeting mapping ways to provide more clean drinking water during 2010.

Water Missions dispatches portable purification systems to those in need. The units have 275-gallon tanks in steel cages that can be put on pickup trucks and taken to remote areas. The units include generators that operate pumps to purify water from ponds or streams.

The nonprofit group, founded in 2001, estimates it has provided safe drinking water to more than 1.6 million people in 40 countries.

The weeklong workshop started Thursday.
