Regional approach needed to boost SC I-95 corridor

Associated Press - December 5, 2009 12:05 PM ET

FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - Officials say a regional approach is needed to bring prosperity to the Interstate 95 corridor in South Carolina.

The yearlong assessment was commissioned to identify ways to address challenges in the 17 counties along the corridor. The Florence Morning News reported Saturday that researchers told leaders Friday the region's first priority should be to boost local leadership.

A 2005 film entitled "Corridor of Shame" highlighted rural schools in the I-95 corridor that sued South Carolina over money for education.

Then-Sen. Barack Obama saw the film and visited 1 of the schools, Dillon's 113-year-old J.V. Martin Junior High. As president, Obama invited a J.V. Martin student who had written to him about the dilapidated school to attend a congressional address.
