Tornado watch blankets South Carolina

Associated Press - December 9, 2009 6:35 AM ET

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Much of South Carolina has been placed under a tornado watch as a line of intense storms and high winds quickly rolls across the state.

The National Weather Service issued the watch for 31 of the state's 46 counties Wednesday morning. It expires at 10 a.m. and covers the central portion of the state.

There is also a tornado warning in effect until 6:45 a.m. for Fairfield County and northeastern Newberry County. Forecasters issued that warning after radar showed a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado.

People in those areas are advised to seek shelter until the storm passes.
