SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) – After a two-year long process, the plans for development along the Edisto River are finally ready. The development would be located on MeadWestvaco's property east of Highway 61 to Highway 17. The company owns almost 80 thousand acres of land along the Edisto River in Charleston and Dorchester Counties.
MWV planners have come up with a regional master plan for the eastern side of the river. Development would include towns and villages with education and employment opportunities. MWV says the land will remain 75 percent green, but still give people a place to live, work, learn, and shop.
"As the people who have contributed look at this place, they'll recognize their ideas are coming to life in the plan. We've gone to great pains to incorporate people's ideas and desires for East Edisto," said MWV Community and Land Development President Kenneth Seeger.
There were almost 20 public meetings to find out what people wanted near their communities. The first of three development phases will start in Dorchester County near Summerville.
This long-range plan will span over 50 years. MWV is now working with the appropriate government agencies to secure development agreements.
