COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A priest from Minnesota has been elected the new bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina.

The State of Columbia reports that the Rev. W. Andrew Waldo won on the third ballot over five other candidates. Waldo is the pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church in Excelsior, Minn.

Waldo says he is excited to return to the South, where he has family.

Waldo was picked by more than 350 clergy and lay delegates who spent the day in worship and prayer before the vote.

Three South Carolinians were among the six candidates.

Waldo will take over for retiring Bishop Dorsey F. Henderson Jr.
