NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - On Saturday, a teenager was killed on James Island while driving an ATV.

The Charleston County Coroner says 16-year-old Rashan Grant's 4-wheeler crashed into another vehicle on Greenhill Road, and he died a few hours later of chest injuries sustained in the accident.

Kyle Carter of Charleston Power Sports says there are rules in place to keep you safe, like always wear a helmet, and never take an ATV on the road.

"These are strictly off-road vehicles and it states that in the owners manual. Number one, you can get a citation on it, number two, it's not safe," said Carter.

The machines are also age specific, with smaller, slower models for children ages 6-11, and ages 12-15. The smaller models have options where parents can govern the maximum speed, and a chord they can pull to stop the ATV from moving.

The adult models are for ages 16 and up and can drive as fast as 85 miles per hour.

Carter recommends parents supervise their children on any motorized vehicle, and there are classes that can teach proper procedure.

Carter says their store mandates that customers know the rules and sign a form before they ever leave the store.
