US Marshal, deputies capture doctor wanted for harassment

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston County Sheriff's deputies arrested a former surgeon accused of harassment after a traffic stop Thursday night.

Karl Leonard Ehrens was wanted for allegedly harassing an 18-year-old girl and violating a restraining order.

A U.S. Marshal and Charleston County Sheriff's deputies caught up with Ehrens during a traffic stop on Glenn McConnell Parkway a few miles from his home, Maj. John Clark said.

Wednesday night no one answered the door at the house listed as Ehren's home address on an incident report, but moments later the garage at that home opened and a man driving a black Honda pulled out.

Despite attempts to get the man to stop, he sped off in the car.

Sheriff's deputies said Thursday night that they arrested Ehrens at that same address.

The sheriff's office said Ehrens was a surgical intern at the Medical University, but no longer works there.

MUSC released a statement that said Ehrens was a resident in training at the hospital in the general surgery program beginning July 1, 2008. His last date of employment with MUSC was February 7, 2009.

On his Facebook page there are numerous pictures of Ehrens with a swollen eye. There is also a picture of engagement rings and what appears to be a single bullet on the case. Next to that bullet is a magazine full of ammo.

The parents of the victim said they are concerned for the safety of their daughter.

They had a big stack of letters they said Ehrens sent to their daughter. One letter concerned them in particular.

In it they said Ehrens talks about a "big day" and makes mention of his last will and testament.

The writer of the letter also talks about a deadline to "finish my story."

That deadline is just more than a month away on September 1.

The victim has allegedly been harassed since last year. On Jan. 4, 2009 North Charleston police were again dispatched, this time to a different location where a woman said Ehrens left a note on the front door and then fled the scene.

The victims stated that Ehrens parked his dark colored Saturn down the road, knocked on the door and then left the note on the door and fled the area.

Both female victims were in fear for their safety and said the note made no sense and was a small story. The females were informed of the warrant process and how to obtain an order of protection.

And on Dec. 22, 2009 North Charleston police were dispatched to a home where two female victim said that Ehrens had been calling and leaving vulgar text messages for the last month despite being told to stop.
