CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - When the temperature rises humans are not the only ones looking to stay cool. The hot weather has many animals on the search for some relief, which can bring some unwanted visitors into your home.
For seven years, Robert Vanwormer of Southern Trappers has made it his business to catch animals. He has never seen a summer this hot and that has made his job twice as hard.
"It is a pretty hectic time," said Vanwormer. "It's been a warm summer so not everything is in the attic. Now they are under houses and inside walls."
As animals get more daring, home owners become more desperate. Vanwormer has removed a wide variety of species over the last month including squirrels, bats and possums. The warm weather has brought out more rats, which means more snakes.
"Snakes use rats as a food source. We have been doing a lot of snake calls lately," Vanwormer said.
Surprisingly, the majority of Vanwormer's calls come from a place you would least suspect, ocean front property. He said the more this prime time location is developed the fewer places animals have to call home, and that brings them into yours.
"Something chewing on their screen door. You put out a trap and just hope," Vanwormer added.
Thursday, Vanwormer caught several culprits. He caught a bigger than average raccoon, a snake, possum and raccoon, all before lunch. These animals will have to find another way to beat the heat.
