Finance committee nixes all but 1 point in Sea Island plan

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Almost two hours of debate and deliberation at Thursday night's finance committee meeting could not move the Sea Island Greenway project closer to realization.

Council members turned down two proposals and a third was withdrawn before eight members approved a measure to look at safety improvements along Main and Bohickets roads on Johns Island.

The safety improvements make up part of a larger Sea Island Greenway master plan that never managed to gain majority support Thursday night.

The proposal also calls for up to a $60 million grant application to the Department of Transportation for a TIGER II grant that would presumably cover most of the development expenses.

Since the full greenway plan was not approved, only $5 million in grants was approved in Thursday night's meeting, said Jennie Davis Flinn with the Charleston County Government.

The plan also calls for a multi-jurisdictional agreement with the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments to add the Sea Island Greenway to the long range transportation goals for the region.

The plan would then seek proposals to build and fund the Greenway project.

According to the finance committee's agenda, the department head approved the passage of all four tenets of the plan. However, the full committee could not come to a consensus on the plan.

The approved piece of the greenway project, the safety upgrades, will now move to the full county council for a vote next Tuesday.
