CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - State Treasurer Curtis Loftis says returning lost money to people is the best part of his job.
"It is a great job. The permanent staff at the treasurer's office has been doing this for years. There are ten people and they are really busy. They're detectives and they do a good job," Loftis says.
They helped Bob Flynn of West Ashley track down some money he couldn't find after his bank merged with another.
"I had several accounts with the bank and they brought all the banks. All the accounts over in the merger except that one account and I had a little pocket of money in that account to run an ATM card from," Flynn said.
The state treasurer's office returns unclaimed cash or property to people all the time. It's money from old bank accounts and utility deposits, stocks and retirement accounts.
"We distribute about $13 million a year back to South Carolinians," Loftis says.
And thanks to stories about unclaimed cash on Live 5, Bob Flynn knew to contact the state treasurer's office.
