CHARLESTON, SC-(WCSC)-Nathan Mays is 28 years old, at age 9 he was diagnosed with diabetes.  For 15 years he was able to live with his disease, then at age 24 he lost his vision. He needed a transplant.

"I had noticed that I needed a transplant in 2007.  I was on the kidney and pancreas transplant list for 2 years."

Needing both a new kidney and pancreas. His case was exteremely severe.  "There were times I felt like giving up. But God had seemed to spare my life."

For two years Nathan's faith kept him going.  Then one day he got the call.  "Well the phone call just caught me off guard."

The surprise?  He was getting a new kidney and a new pancreas.  Before the transplant, he had never felt worse in his life.  Immediately after the surgery, everything changed.

"That's when everything kind of fell into place. As far as my appetite, my weight gain, everything."

Nathan isn't the only success story.  Eleven years ago Jody Sawyer had a liver transplant.  It saved her life.  Her husband Richard stood by her the whole way.  Now she's returning the favor. Last week he also had a liver transplant.

"It's amazing what they can do for you, what the surgeons can do for you. And it's a blessing cause I am here to help him out."  Faith, patience, persereverence.  Each patient has their own quality, that helps them battle each day.
