WCSC-TV5: An Historic and Innovative Station

 

·          WCSC-TV5 was the first television station in Charleston and in South Carolina, founded with the goal of serving “­wonderful charleston

south carolina .”

 

 

 

 

·          In 1953, WCSC-TV’s aerial tower was the highest structure in the city at 440 feet.

 

 

 

 

·          WCSC began broadcasting at 31 kilowatts with a viewer range of 100 miles.

 

 

 

 

·          “Five is Alive” were the first words used to sign the station on the air in 1953.  Weathercaster Charlie Hall signed the station on the air.

 

 

 

 

·          WCSC was the first station in

South Carolina to broadcast in full color and use videotapes for programming and news coverage.

 

 

 

 

·          WCSC was the first station in

Charleston to offer its live broadcasts from locations throughout the Lowcountry  and this is how we developed the name “Live 5 News”.

 

 

 

 

·          WCSC-TV was the first to showcase black entertainers during prime time.

 

 

 

 

·          WCSC-TV was first to support educational television in South Carolina with the donation of time, space and equipment to create WITV Channel 7 in

Charleston .

 

 

 

 

·          In 1978, WCSC-TV was the first station in S.C. to utilize satellite technology. During this year, Channel 5 made history with reports from Rome and

Vienna .

 

 

 

 

·          In May 1978 WCSC-TV had an unprecedented 99 share in prime time for the Miss USA Pageant (CBS) live from

Charleston, S.C.

 

 

 

 

·          In 1985, WCSC-TV added CONUS, a satellite uplink capability which enabled live coverage of events from any location in the continental

.  Also color graphics, which added a great boost to weathercasts and commercial production.

 

 

 

 

·          In 1986, WCSC-TV built a 2000 foot tower enabling channel 5’s broadcast signal to reach almost half the state of S.C.

 

 

 

 

·          In 1990, WCSC-TV was the recipient of the nationally acclaimed Peabody Award.

 

 

 

 

·          In 1990, WCSC-TV was the first station in

South Carolina to receive the nationally acclaimed Polk Award.

 

 

 

 

·          In 1990, WCSC-TV began telecasting entire newscasts live from the Coastal Carolina Fair in a building built specifically for us by the exchange club of

Charleston .

 

 

 

 

·          In 1991, WCSC-TV was the first station in the market to provide two full newscasts on Saturday and Sunday.

 

 

 

 

·          In 1995, WCSC-TV won station of the year awarded by the South Carolina Broadcasters Association.

 

 

 

 

·          In April 1996, WCSC-TV was the first station in the

to have automated early weather warnings on cable channels.

 

 

 

 

·          Live Super Doppler 5000, the Lowcountry’s only live, local radar, went online in January of 2000.
