"To help kids is really one of the best causes out there."

Runners who take part in the annualJames Island Connector Run say they are excited to be part of it.

The 2016 James Island Connector Run kicks off Oct. 22.

Proceeds from the event support the the Gavalas Kolkanko Foundation. Co-founded by Nick Gavalas in 1999, the foundation has awarded 95 college scholarships to students with physical disabilities.

Since 1999, the Foundation has raised more than $600,000 for Lowcountry students, according to the event's website.

"We're building the next generation to take over the run right now," Gavalas said at 2014's run. "You would be very impressed with the leadership that's emerging. It's going to be fantastic for it!"

The event includes a 10K run and bike ride and a 5K run and walk.
