Local NewsResidents Complain About Edisto Pothole ProblemsSheldon Dutes, Live 5 NewsThe parking lot at the Edisto Island Post Office has become somewhat of an obstacle course for drivers like Callie White. "Well, I have to watch both for vehicles, find a place to park and dodge the potholes,” White said. White drives to the Edisto Island Post office a few times a week and says she is frustrated with all of the parking lot's potholes. "First of all it's a safety hazard and it also harms your vehicle, plus it's an eyesore,” she said. According to White, the post office attempted to patch the holes up in the past, however, their quick fixes aren't measuring up now. There are nearly 10 potholes in the parking lot, some of them even ankle deep, which creates a huge headache for drivers. But the postmaster says they're working to fill the potholes. A North Carolina company is under contract and will repair the lot, however, the start date hasn’t been determined yet. If you have to drive over potholes in parking lots like these or on the road, you could be damaging your car. "Over an extended period of time it could do several things, it could damage your tires, it could cause the steel belts in the tires to separate,” said Charles Spence of McCaskill’s Auto Shop. Spence says you could also knock the front end of your car out of alignment, which could lead to pricey repairs. But until these problematic potholes are filled, drivers like Callie White say they'll continue to be defensive drivers. If there are potholes in your neighborhood you can call the city of Charleston at 768-4653 and leave your name, number and the location of the pothole. © 2008 WCSC, Inc. All rights reserved.
