Local NewsWhere The Charleston 9 DiedLive 5 NewsWhen the 9 charleston firefighters trapped inside the Sofa Super Store started calling for help, firefighters from outside agencies were sent in after them. The report from NIOSH says once inside the showroom, two firefighters from neighboring departments briefly made contact with two of the trapped and disoriented city firemen, presumably Brad Baity and James Drayton, but before they could be led to safety, there was an explosion and the showroom filled with flames. The mutual aid firemen lost contact with the other men and were driven back by the heat and flames. Baity and Drayton's bodies were the only ones found near the front of the showroom. Michael French, Melvin Champaign, and Captain Mike Benke's bodies were found near each other in a huge room connected to the loading dock area. Brandon Thompson and Captain Louis Mulkey were found in separate rooms to the rear of the showroom. The bodies of Captain Billy Hutchinson and Mark Kelsey were found in the back of the showroom. © 2008 WCSC, Inc. All rights reserved.
