WASHINGTON (AP) - Senate Democrats are promising they'll do their best to get President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee confirmed quickly.
Majority Leader Harry Reid says he will do all he can to ensure Judge Sonia Sotomayor "receives a fair and respectful hearing" and quick confirmation.
Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy says Sotomayor has "a long and distinguished career on the federal bench" and was twice confirmed by the Senate with bipartisan support.
New York Sen. Charles Schumer says Sotomayor meets three important standards: "excellence, moderation and diversity."
Newly minted Democrat Arlen Specter says her confirmation "would add needed diversity" by making her the first Hispanic and the third woman to serve on the high court.
