LADSON, SC (WCSC) -Thursday afternoon just before five o'clock, a man wearing a towel over his face walked into the Best Western motel near College Park Road and I-26. The clerk came out to see what was going on, and had no idea she was about to become the victim of a violent crime. "Shock, I mean really shock. I mean this was totally uncalled for," said Berkeley County Sheriff's Office spokesman Dan Moon after watching the surveillance video of the incident.
The guy pulled out a gun and demanded money from the cash register. The clerk tried to hand him the cash drawer, but the bandit wanted her to personally hand him the cash. After she did that, deputies say he still wasn't satisfied. "He wanted some money from her. He wants her purse, wants to get some money from her," Moon said.
After telling him she had no money in her purse, the gunman went ballistic and hit her in the head with the pistol. "He started to leave and he just took that pistol and knocked the fool out of her. I mean just totally mean, just mean," said Moon.
The victim suffered a laceration to the forehead. Moon said the outcome could have been a lot worse. "I think this lady is lucky to be alive. This guy will do something like that? Gee, he could have easily popped somebody."
The bandit ran out through the front door. Investigators say he may have hopped into a car and hit I-26. "That's a problem sometime. You can jump right on the interstate in a hurry and be gone," said Moon. Gone but not forgotten by Berkeley deputies who need your help to identify him. "Hope we can find this guy. I'm gonna tell you, somebody who will go in there and do something like that is just mean and needs to be stopped," warned Moon.
If you have any information on the robbery, call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111. You can remain anonymous and may earn a cash reward.
