CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -Thirty four year old Verna Carter is wanted on charges of Food Stamp Fraud. Charleston County deputies say Carter lied on her application to get $3,500 worth of food stamps. "They simply lie on the applications," said Charleston County Sheriff's Detective Reggie Sharpe. "Perhaps they're earning money in one instance and not claiming it. That would make them eligible for government assistance."
Cops say Carter is one of many people who are committing this type of crime. "We're seeing a great deal more now because of the economic times. As a result, the entities are starting to take a harder look at who's getting what," Deputy Sharpe explained. "When they're stealing from the government, they're stealing from the taxpayer. That's who foots the bill."
Authorities say this is not the first time Carter has lied to get food stamps. "If you can do it and get by with it, it's a good enticement to keep doing it. They're not gonna stop until they get caught and held accountable," Sharpe warned.
Verna Carter's last known address was on Barton Street on Johns Island. If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111. You can remain anonymous and may earn a cash reward.
