Beaufort Co sheriffs take barricaded suspect into custody Saturday

BLUFFTON, SC (WCSC) - A Bluffton man was arrested Saturday evening following a stand-off with deputies at a Windy Lakes home.

21-year-old Joshua Gongora was taken into custody just after 6 pm on Saturday after deputies responded to 9 Windy Lake Ct. in reference to a reported domestic dispute. Upon arrival, deputies located 23-year old Morgan Folaros lying in the front yard, bleeding and unconscious.

Witnesses reported seeing Gongora, Folaros' boyfriend, running from the scene, to his own nearby residence at 7 Lotus Ct. Deputies discovered that Gongora had barricaded himself in the house, armed with a knife and threatening to kill himself.

Also in the house was his 19-year old brother Jeremy Gongora, who initially refused to leave fearing his brother would harm himself.

Sheriff's deputies were able to establish communication with the elder Gongora and convinced the younger Gongora to exit the residence. Jeremy was ushered to safety, unharmed, leaving his brother alone in the house.

Deputies continued to communicate with Gongora, who had begun cutting himself with both the knife and pieces of glass from a broken window. The Sheriff's Office SWAT Team was utilized to make entry to the residence and take Joshua into custody.

Joshua was evaluated by EMS for multiple superficial self-inflicted cuts to his throat, chest, and abdomen. He was also evaluated and treated at Beaufort Memorial Hospital prior to being taken into custody by the Beaufort County Detention Center on the charge of Criminal Domestic Violence of a High and Aggravated Nature.

The victim, Folaros, was transported to Hilton Head Regional Medical Center for treatment of a fractured nose and other facial/head injuries. Her condition remains undisclosed at this time.
