1 dead after accident at Charleston port

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - An accident that happened about 10:30 am Wednesday at the North Charleston terminal claimed the life of a truck driver.

According to Byron Miller with the SC Ports Authority, the accident happened as the driver was walking through the storage yard and was struck by a piece of equipment.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of the victim at this time," said Miller.

Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten identified the victim as 64-year-old Calvin "Jake" Jacobs of Goose Creek. Jacobs was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the accident.

North Charleston Police are investigating the accident. An autopsy will be done by the coronor Thursday.
