CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The soundscape of downtown Charleston is changing with new bells at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Broad Street.
There are three bells from France named Stella Maris, Star of the Sea, St. Therese and St. Finbar. Bishop Robert Guglielmone blessed the bells after the noon Mass Thursday, and says they should be raised into the Cathedral's bell tower in the next few months.
Catholics from across the Diocese were in attendance, and had an opportunity to sign the Bells' frame, leaving their mark for years to come.
The Bells are part of the steeple project at the Cathedral and were purchased with donations. They cost around $140,000. On Nov. 14, the Cathedral is hosting the Bishop's Ball fundraiser at the Hibernian Hall in Downtown Charleston to help complete the restoration.
