Gaston woman dies, son rescued in fiery crash

GASTON, SC (AP) - A South Carolina woman has died but her 3-year-old son was rescued from a fiery collision with a van.

Multiple media outlets reported that 29-year-old Barbara J. Morton of Lexington died in the wreck Tuesday evening near Gaston.

Authorities say the woman's son, Mikey Pound, was saved by the van driver that caused the wreck.

Ricky Spires of Gaston burned both arms trying to get Morton out of the car but says she was pinned in the driver's seat.

The van driver, 40-year-old Ray Shealy, has been charged with failure to yield. Officials say he turned left in front of Morton.

Lexington County Coroner Harry Harman says she died from trauma.
