CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Deputies investigating the murder of Kathryn Keener say the Charleston woman was shot and killed apparently while driving her SUV. Keener was last heard from on August 1.

Three days later he burned vehicle was found on Bears Swamp Road in West Ashley. Two days later her body was found in the swamp.

On September 17, deputies arrested 21-year-old Jessie James Murphy and charged him with Keener's murder. Investigators say the suspect and  victim knew each other and had a relationship that involved drugs.

At a preliminary hearing Wednesday morning, Charleston County Sheriff's Detective Derrick Boyd testified Keener was shot mostly likely while she was behind the wheel of her car.

"It appears from all reports the victim was possibly the last one driving the vehicle and she died of a single gunshot wound to the right temple," Detective Boyd said. "It appears she was shot while driving the vehicle, going down Bears Swamp, that vehicle ran off the road from there."

Investigators say a witness told them he saw Murphy carrying a .38 caliber revolver before Murphy allegedly met with Keener on August 1. The witness also told detectives he saw Murpy get rid of a bloody shirt that same afternoon.

Preliminary Hearing Court Judge James Gosnell ruled there was enough probable cause to bound suspect Murphy over for trial.
