CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Two men died early Saturday morning after they lost control of their car during a police chase through McClellanville.
Charleston County Sheriff's deputies were called out to Club 17 North on Highway 17 in McClellanville at about 2:30 am Saturday after deputies received reports of shots being fired in the area.
Deputies spotted cars that matched witness descriptions and began pursuit. They tried to pull over a Jeep Cherokee driven by 27-year-old Marcus Taylor of Huger, but he refused to stop.
The deputies chased Taylor down 17 North and onto Highway 45. That's when Taylor lost control, went off the road, flipped several times, and hit a number of trees. Taylor and his passenger, 23-year-old Robert White, Jr. of Huger, were ejected from the car.
They were pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials said Taylor and White were involved with the reported gunshots, but they don't know why the men were firing shots nor at whom they were trying to shoot.
The accident is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
