Oconee County OKs tax deal that could attract 150 jobs

WALHALLA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina county has approved a tax break that officials say would encourage a company to add up to 150 jobs at a plant expansion.

The Anderson Independent-Mail reported that Oconee County Council on Tuesday approved the 5-year tax break for electricity meter manufacturer Itron, which has a plant in West Union.

County economic development director Jim Alexander says the exact number of new jobs isn't known yet. Alexander says the $30 million expansion will allow Itron to expand its product line at the plant.

The plant now employs more than 600 workers.

Alexander says Itron will present more details of the company's plans when the county council meets Dec. 15.
