CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The widening of Johnnie Dodds Boulevard in Mt. Pleasant is set to begin in the Spring.
The Department of Transportation Commission discussed the $70 million project at The Citadel Thursday afternoon. The project will be funded through the half cent sales tax. One motorist Live 5 News spoke with said, "I think it needs to be done, there's a lot of traffic."
The widening of Johnnie Dodds Boulevard would start at the base of the Ravenel Bridge and extend to Interstate 526. Kurt Taylor, assistant Charleston County Administrator said "it was conceived as adding a lane in each direction to the existing roadway plus some improvements to the frontage roads."
Before construction even starts, Taylor wants to make sure there's a plan in place for the traffic disruption. "One of the things that we're going to require from the construction teams is that they propose a plan that will minimize the traffic disruptions while the improvements are being conducted," he said.
It is unknown how long the construction on Johnnie Dodds will take.
