CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston Fire Department crews responded to a garbage truck fire on the crosstown in downtown Charleston late Thursday morning.

The truck burst into flames at the intersection of Cannon and Courtney streets, said witnesses.

According to witnesses, sparks flew from the Waste Industries truck of Summerville as it came down the off ramp from I-26. A witness flagged the driver down to tell him about the sparks.

As the driver jumped out of the truck's cab, the truck burst into flames.

While an eyewitness recorded the fire on a Blackberry, the driver told the witness the truck was carrying a load of cardboard.
