COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's Adjutant Gen. Stanhope Spears says he will not be running for re-election this year.
Spears was first elected in 1994. The 72-year-old made the announcement Tuesday.
Spears is the longest serving adjutant general in the nation and only the fifth adjutant general in South Carolina.
Spears says it is time for him to pass the torch to another military leader and thanked his longtime supporters.
The adjutant general oversees the Army National Guard, the Air National Guard, the State Guard and the state's Emergency Management Division.
