COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Three people died and six others were injured Wednesday morning after a tractor-trailer collided with a van in Colleton County, said authorities.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the accident happened on Confederate Highway near Highway 601 shortly after 7 a.m.
The truck flipped over during the accident, dumping its load of wood chips across the highway. Both drivers were taken to the Colleton County Regional Hospital.
The van was full of migrant workers; three of the people inside were killed. Others in the van were airlifted to MUSC.
Highway Patrol later identified the driver of the van as 27-year-old Bernardo Lopez-Fernandez from Walterboro and the driver of the tractor-trailer as 47-year-old Ricky Mitchell of Ruffin.
The Colleton County Coroner identified the victims Thursday as Paul Vasquez Serrano, 22, Esteban Alvarado Rivera, 23, and Agustin Garcia Luna, 59. All three men were from Walterboro.
The Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. No charges have been filed.
