DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A woman in a holding cell at the Summerville Annex of the Dorchester County Jail was found hanging Tuesday morning by an employee making rounds.
The woman, 49, was arrested Feb. 1 and charged with DUI and having an open container of alcohol by Dorchester County deputies and transported to the Summerville Annex. She refused a breathalyzer test to determine her blood-alcohol level, said deputies.
She was placed in a holding cell at the annex to await a bond hearing Tuesday morning.
Shortly before 9 a.m., she was found by an employee of the detention center. According to the report, the woman had fashioned a ligature out of items she took into the cell with her. She was cut down, but could not be revived.
She was pronounced dead at the scene, said deputies.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was called in to investigate the death.
The woman's identity has not yet been released by the Dorchester County Coroner's Office, but is expected after her family has been notified.
