SC student arrested on school gun charge

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A 14-year-old high school student near Columbia has been arrested and accused of having a gun on campus.

Multiple media outlets reported the Richland Northeast High School student was arrested Tuesday morning at the school.

The teen's name was not released because of his age. He's accused of having a 9 mm pistol in his waistband.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says the youth is charged with carrying a weapon on school grounds and illegally carrying a pistol.

Lott says other students learned a fellow student was carrying a pistol Monday and told their parents, who called deputies.

Bullets for the pistol were found in a bag in a classroom.

Lott says he doesn't know why the teen had the gun.
