COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A discussion of new limits on lawsuits in South Carolina has been delayed.
A Senate Judiciary panel canceled a hearing Wednesday on legislation to limit lawsuit awards.
The bill would broaden the 2005 limits placed on medical malpractice claims to other litigation.
For instance, pain and suffering awards would be limited to $1 million. Punitive awards against larger employers could be no more than three times the actual amount of damages or $250,000, whichever is more.
The South Carolina Civil Justice Coalition is pushing the legislation. It says changes can make the difference in economic development deals.
