Citadel releases 2010 signing class

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The Citadel Athletics Department and head football coach Kevin Higgins released the names of 24 athletes who will join the Bulldogs as members of the 2010 recruiting class during a press conference held at the Pearson Club Level of the West Side Tower at Johnson Hagood Stadium on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 3 p.m.

The 2010 class is the fifth recruiting class for Higgins since joining the Bulldog staff in 2005. The class consists of 11 athletes from South Carolina schools, including the Lowcountry's Burke, Fort Dorchester, Summerville and Stratford high schools. The remaining 13 athletes represent the states of Alabama (2) Florida (4), Georgia (2), Ohio (1), Pennsylvania (2), Tennessee (1), and Virginia (1).

Among the players are three quarterbacks, including Charleston's Del'Javon Simmons, four running backs and three offensive linemen. On defense, the Bulldogs have signed five linebackers, five defensive backs and three defensive linemen. A kicker from Summerville is also included in the class.

"There is no question this is our deepest and most talented class during our five year tenure," Higgins said. "We met our needs at every position. Since last signing day we had more recruits on campus for junior day, camps and home games than ever before. I know our facility enhancements and the completion of the stadium made a difference in the hearts of our recruits. Also, recruits appreciated the passion and vision provided by General Rosa and faculty during their recruiting trip."

The spring football season will return to February as they kick-off on Thursday, Feb. 25 with spring practice. The four-week practice period will conclude with a Blue and White Game on Saturday, March 27 at 11 a.m. at Johnson Hagood Stadium. The team will report in the fall on Aug. 6 and the Bulldogs' first game of the 2010 season will take place on Sept. 4 against Chowan at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
