COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - A 48-year-old Florence County woman has been charged with a 13-count indictment after aiding in the preparation of false tax returns, U.S. Attorney Kevin McDonald announced Wednesday.
Investigators allege Betty R. Daniels, of Johnsonville, prepared tax returns that falsely claimed exemptions, deductions and credits to which certain taxpayers were not entitled to. As a result, a number of taxpayers received fraudulently inflated refunds, with some receiving refunds when they owed additional money to the IRS.
"Taxpayers should be as careful in choosing their preparer, as they would in choosing a doctor or lawyer," said Special Agent Jeannine Hammett of the IRS-Criminal Investigation.
The maximum penalty Daniels could face is a $250,000 fine and three years of prison time for each count.
