CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Coastal Carolina Police released information on Thursday about a crash on Tuesday that killed a 19-year-old Lexington girl.
According to a police report from officers at CCU, a witness flagged down an officer in the parking lot of the Kearns Building shortly after 4:30 p.m., saying a pedestrian had been hit by a car in the intersection of University Boulevard and Chanticleer Drive East.
When the officer arrived at the scene, he reported finding Michelle Heather Meade, 19, of Lexington, lying in the road on her stomach.
According to the report, Meade was conscious at the time, but was bleeding from the head. EMS crews transported the teen to Conway Medical Center. She was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina where she later died.
The driver of the vehicle that hit Meade, Michael Wesley Poston, 22, said he was in the turn lane on Chanticleer Drive, turning left onto University Boulevard. Poston said he never saw Meade and did not realize he struck her until he heard a thump and saw her lying the road in his rearview mirror.
Accident investigators were at the university Wednesday, recreating the event.
Students at Coastal are saying that the intersection is not a particular trouble spot, but say traffic is a problem throughout campus for pedestrians with the combination of distracted drivers and students trying to get to class.
