COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - A Myrtle Beach man pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday of re-entering the U.S. after being deported by immigration officials.
Leonardo DeLeon, 30,was deported to his home country of Honduras in 2001 but snuck back into the country. He has been living in Myrtle Beach.
Myrtle Beach police, with the help of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, identified DeLeon as a member of the Mexican Mafia street gang. During processing, he was connected to an attempted murder conviction in Texas in 1999.
He was deported after the 1999 conviction.
U.S. Attorney Kevin McDonald said the maximum penalty DeLeon can receive is a fine of $250,000 and 20 years in prison.
