SC legislators approve texting, cell phone ban

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Bill that limit a driver's use of cell phones have advanced in the South Carolina Legislature.

The House Education Committee approved on Tuesday a bill banning drivers from both text messaging and talking with a cell phone held to their ear. An effort to separate the issues and ban only texting failed there.

The Senate Judiciary Committee, however, approved a bill barring texting only.

The separate measures move to the Senate and House floors.

Many legislators think barring chatting with a phone at one ear goes too far. They question how that's worse than other things that distract drivers, such as eating, fiddling with the radio or putting on makeup.
