WINNSBORO, S.C. (AP) - A former South Carolina police chief has been found not guilty of two counts of assault and battery in a bar fight.
Former Winnsboro Public Safety Director Wayne Yates told WIS-TV that he felt vindicated by Tuesday's acquittal.
Police say Yates and three other men attacked a man outside a bar in October after an argument. One witness testified Yates pushed the victim to the ground, but the victim testified he thought the push wasn't on purpose and Yates was trying to break up the fight.
Yates resigned his chief's job shortly after his arrest. He says he had to find another way to make a living, so he bought the bar where the fight happened and renamed it "Chief's Place."
