New leader at Shaw AFB in SC takes key war role

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - A brigadier general who's been at an Air Force base in Alaska is taking over a key command at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.

Brig. Gen. Mark Graper was named Tuesday as vice commander of the U.S. Air Force Central Command based at Shaw Air Force Base. He will arrive in South Carolina next month.

The commander of the command, Lt. Gen. Mike Hostage, made the announcement during a visit at the base in Sumter.

Graper has commanded the 354th Fighter Wing in Alaska.

The Air Force Central Command coordinates air operations in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
