CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Ben Sawyer Bridge connecting Sullivan's Island to Mt. Pleasant opened back up Friday morning.

The first cars were allowed to cross the bridge around 1:50 am. Sullivan's Island Mayor Carl Smith was the first to drive across the bridge, stopping to thank construction workers along the way. He was also the last to cross the old Ben Sawyer Bridge before the renovations began. Mayor Smith rode across in Chauncey Clark's Model A Ford. Sullivan's Island Council Member, Dr. Pat O'Neil claimed the title of the first person to run the newly opened bridge.

It took a little more than 10 days and $32.5 million to renovated the bridge. That money was funded entirely by federal dollars.
