HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina group wants to put a visitor center at what is considered 1 of the first villages for freed slaves in the United States.

The Mitchelville Committee has asked Beaufort County Council for $65,000 to create a visitor center at the site on the north end of Hilton Head Island. The committee wants to convert a warehouse for the center.

Mitchelville was established during the Civil War after Union troops captured the island. It once had a population of about 1,500.

The committee has been negotiating to buy about five acres to add to the more than 2 acres the town has set aside for a planned living-history museum.
