Moncks Corner man gets life in prison for child's death

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina man has been sentenced to life in prison after being convicted in the death of a toddler more than a year ago.

Multiple media outlets reported 27-year-old Justin Hillerby of Summerville was convicted of homicide by child abuse Thursday in Moncks Corner in the death of his girlfriend's child.

Twenty-two-month old Blaise Spoerl died in September 2008 after being struck in the head and face.

Hillerby on Thursday told jurors he had no idea how the boy suffered 23 blows. Hillerby says Blaise was fine when he put him to bed.

Prosecutors say Hillerby showed he was responsible in a call to the boy's mother from jail more than a week after Blaise died.

Defense attorney Michael Bosnak said the case was based on false confessions, none of which was recorded.
