Volunteer investigators take Hilton Head cold case

HILTON HEAD,SC - HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A group of retired police officers is reviewing the 2-year-old disappearance of a South Carolina couple.

Multiple media outlets reported that Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner has asked 10 volunteer retirees to look at the case of John and Elizabeth Calvert.

The coupled lived part-time in Hilton Head Island and owned several businesses in Beaufort County. They disappeared after meeting with their bookkeeper Dennis Gerwing in March 2008.

Police said the couple suspected Gerwing of taking money from their businesses. Gerwing killed himself the day police named him a person of interest in their disappearance.

The Calverts have been declared dead by a court, but the case still has many questions the sheriff hopes the new volunteer team can answer.
